How To Prevent Hyperglycemia With A Diabetic Diet
Diabetics constantly have to watch their blood sugar levels to make sure they are consistently steady and make sure that they are in their target range. Often times though, diabetics do not maintain a healthy diabetic diet and wind up eating foods that result in higher sugar levels.
If the diabetic lets her blood sugar levels get too high over an extended period of time, she can wind up developing what doctors call hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia can cause some very serious health problems, but this condition can be easily avoided by learning just what causes this condition so these causes can be avoided.
Hyperglycemia is a medical term that simply means a person who has too much sugar in their system. A high sugar level happens when our body can not make the insulin as you see in type 1 diabetics or from our body’s inability to respond to the insulin properly as you see in type 2 diabetics.
Sugar is processed by our bodies in a straightforward fashion. The sugar enters our bodies from the foods that we eat. Once the sugar is inside our bodies, the pancreas starts producing the insulin needed which helps carry the sugar into the cells. Once inside the cells, it is turned into energy which is used by our bodies.
This same procedure happens in all individuals but there is a slight difference in how the diabetic’s body processes the sugar. Their bodies stop creating insulin or create too little to handle the large amount of sugar being eaten. This results in the sugar fostering in their system and it has no where to go but to their internal organs. This results in excess sugar being left to build up in their system and thus causes hyperglycemia.
Letting this excess sugar build up over a long stretch of time is very dangerous because it will damage your major organs that you need to live. It will start off by harming your blood vessels and then will work its way to damaging your heart vessel, eyes, nerves, and kidneys.
Hyperglycemia does not turn up right away and the results can only be seen in the long term. This is why you will not see this condition in children and teenagers. It will, however, start to show up in older adults if they have never managed to stay on a nourishing diabetic diet.
Hyperglycemia is a serious condition that diabetics should start to consider when they are maintaining a diabetic diet. Straying from a diabetic diet and eating the wrong foods can cause some very health serious problems that deal with their heart, kidneys, nerves, and eyes. Although children and teens can not get this, diabetics need to start monitoring what they eat so they do not get it when they are older.
