Having a high blood glucose (sugar) level over time will affect nerves, eyes and kidneys. We will go over the symptoms, warning signs and what you can do in this article.

Nerve damage or diabetic neuropathy occurs when high levels of glucose accumulate in the cells surrounding the nerves. This makes it difficult for the nerve to send messages to the brain and other parts of the body. The feet and legs are most often affected first. You may lose feeling and find it difficult to sense pain and thus have damage from your shoes rubbing, stepping on objects or temperature extremes. Painful tingling may also occur due to your diabetic condition and you should consult your physician for treatment or medications that will help. Also call you doctor if you have:

Loss of feeling or numbnessA feeling of walking on cotton or funny feeling in both feetAny sharp pain or tinglingLeg weaknessA burning feeling in any part of your body

Eye problems are also common as over 4 million people suffer from diabetic retinopathy. This is a disease where the small blood vessels within the retina of the eye are weak or damaged from high blood glucose levels. When the vessels are damaged they cause the leaking of fluid which swells the eye itself. This swelling can cause blurred vision and if the retinopathy worsens it can cause bleeding Once this occurs scar tissue forms and pulls the retina from the back of the eye and may lead to blindness. Call your doctor if you have:

· Loss of vision in one or both eyes

· Blurred vision for more than two days

· Floaters across your field of vision

· Black spots or any unusual change in your vision

· Redness, pressure or pain in your eye(s)

Kidney damage can take place when the vessels are damaged and the kidney stops functioning or functions at less than optimum levels or diabetic nephropathy. High blood pressure coupled with high glucose levels are the main cause. You can reduce this risk by monitoring the protein in the urine with your doctor and getting treatment to help protect the kidney. Warning signs are:

Frequent urinationBlood in your urineSwelling of hands or feet signaling decreased kidney functionHigh blood pressureProtein n urine (a test performed by your doctor and essential if you have diabetes)
